Outpace Learning ("we," "us," or "our") operates outpacelearning.ai, an AI-powered homeschool learning platform designed for children ages 8–12 and their parents. We are committed to protecting the privacy of children and families who use our platform.

2. Our Core Privacy Commitment

We collect only what is strictly necessary to deliver the service. Nothing more.

3. COPPA Compliance — Children Under 13

Parental Consent

We do not collect personal information from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent. All accounts are created by a parent or legal guardian. By creating a child profile on Outpace Learning, the parent or guardian:

• Confirms they are the parent or legal guardian of the child
• Provides consent for their child to use the platform
• Takes responsibility for ensuring their child's use complies with these terms

What We Collect About Children

For child profiles, we collect only:

• Name (first name or nickname) — used to personalize the learning experience
• Age / grade level — used to calibrate lesson difficulty
• Avatar selection — a chosen emoji, not a photo
• Learning progress — lesson completion, phases, draft content, AI tutor conversations
• Gamification data — XP points, level, streak, badges earned

We do not collect: full name, photo, home address, phone number, school name, or geolocation from children.

How We Use Children's Data

Data collected about children is used solely to:

• Deliver and personalize the educational experience
• Track progress within lessons
• Display learning history in the parent dashboard
• Power gamification features (XP, levels, badges)

We never use children's data for advertising, behavioral profiling, or any purpose unrelated to education.

Parental Rights Under COPPA

As a parent or guardian, you have the right to:

• Review the personal information we have collected from your child
• Correct inaccurate information about your child
• Delete your child's personal information from our systems
• Refuse to permit further collection or use of your child's information

To exercise any of these rights, email us at privacy@outpacelearning.ai from the email address associated with your account. We will respond within 30 days.

4. Information We Collect from Parents

When you create a parent account, we collect:

• Email address — used for login, account notifications, and support
• Name — used to personalize your dashboard
• Password — stored as a secure one-way hash (bcrypt). We never store plain-text passwords.
• Subscription status — plan type and billing status, managed via Stripe

We do not store your full payment card details. Payment processing is handled by Stripe, which maintains its own PCI-compliant infrastructure.

5. AI Tutor Conversations

When a child interacts with the AI tutor, messages are processed by the Anthropic Claude API. Conversations are:

• Stored in our database linked to the child's learning session
• Visible to the parent in the parent dashboard
• Scoped strictly to the lesson context — the AI cannot engage in off-topic conversations
• Sent to Anthropic's API for processing, subject to Anthropic's Privacy Policy

Conversation history is retained as part of the child's learning record. Parents can request deletion of conversation data at any time.

6. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

When you log in, we set a single session cookie that keeps you authenticated. This cookie:

• Is HttpOnly — inaccessible to JavaScript (prevents XSS attacks)
• Is Secure — transmitted only over HTTPS
• Expires after your session or when you log out
• Contains a random token, not personal information

We do not use:

• Third-party advertising cookies
• Analytics tracking cookies (Google Analytics, etc.)
• Social media tracking pixels (Meta Pixel, Twitter Pixel, etc.)
• Fingerprinting or behavioral tracking technologies

Because we use only a session cookie necessary for the site to function, we do not display a cookie consent banner — there is nothing to consent to beyond what is essential.

7. Data Sharing

We never sell, rent, or share your personal information or your child's personal information with third parties for commercial purposes.

We share data only with:

• Anthropic — to process AI tutor conversations (messages only, no personal identifiers sent)
• Stripe — to process subscription payments (billing info only)
• Neon / PostgreSQL — our database infrastructure provider, where all platform data is stored

We may share information if required by law (e.g., a valid court order), but we will notify you unless legally prohibited from doing so.

8. Data Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data:

• All data is transmitted over HTTPS/TLS
• Passwords are hashed with bcrypt (one-way, salted)
• Session tokens are cryptographically random
• Database access is restricted to application-level credentials

No system is 100% secure. If a data breach occurs that affects your personal information, we will notify you promptly by email.

9. Data Retention and Deletion

We retain your data while your account is active. If you cancel your subscription:

• Your account and your child's progress data remains intact (you keep what you've earned)
• You lose access to the AI tutor until you resubscribe

To permanently delete your account and all associated data (including all child profiles and learning history), email privacy@outpacelearning.ai with the subject line "Account Deletion Request." We will complete deletion within 30 days and confirm by email.

After deletion, your data is permanently removed from our systems. We do not retain backups of deleted accounts beyond 90 days.

10. Children's Content Ownership

All essays, projects, drafts, and creative work produced by a child on Outpace Learning belongs to the child (and their parent/guardian). We do not claim ownership over any student-generated content. See our Terms of Service for the full content policy.

11. Third-Party Links

Our platform may contain links to external resources (for research, references, etc.). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of external websites. We encourage parents to review the privacy policies of any sites their children visit.

12. Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy (particularly changes affecting how we handle children's data), we will:

• Update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page
• Notify you by email at least 14 days before changes take effect
• For changes affecting children's data, obtain fresh parental consent where required by COPPA
